Becoming a game tester, possible?

Is it really possible to get paid good money to test games for companies from home or in “office.” Are there jobs like this really out there or are they just a big hoax? I have done serious research on this however the problem is I have not found a decent one that sounds even slightly real. “pay” $200 and ill tell you the secret or “deposit” $99 dollars in this account in order to secure your job… -_- so I ask you if I truly wanted to become a game tester assuming its possible where do I begin?

To be honest, most game developers tend to test their titles in-house (the dev team play them too) or with focus groups. You can get involved in being a beta tester, but it’s (by and large) an unpaid position. There are people who will generally fall all over themselves to test a game — even a crappy one — so why pay someone? I’d also note that those who hang in there testing and completing crappy games on or ahead of time and with excellent documentation are the ones who get in on the awesome games. (They don’t just give you Halo or Bioshock to test. You have to make it through a bunch of My Little Ponies level garbage first.)

But no, most companies do not pay beta testers. Much like you suspect, those sites are cons. Some of the best testers may eventually be brought in-house to test and thus become paid testers — but it’s not common. and it’s going to require playing a lot of crappy games and putting in a bunch of hard work to get there.

If you really want a career in video games, I suggest studying hard and attending a school like Full Sail for design/creation, or largely any college across the nation if you’re looking to write about/design storylines for games.

If you’re just looking to play them, then you may do better training for the competitive leagues/large competitions — and even then, I’d recommend a day job.
