James asks…

How Tough Is Game Designing?

To clarify what I want to do, I’m looking to be one of the folks who helps with how the game flows, as in the story, character personalities, etc. I have a few questions about this, actually.

1) Is it tough to get a Game Designer Degree?
2) What else is needed to get that specific job?
3) How hard is it to get a job in the field, and what would be my starting position and salary(probably a game tester, right)?

admin answers:

Game designing is different than game development, so make sure you know which one you are really interested in.

Game design involves graphic design, story writing, translations, character development (personality-wise), etc….

Game design does not include any programming, that is game development.

Being in the game design field, you will not be placed as a game tester. That would be an area of game development and you need some knowledge of programming in order to be considered for that particular job.

Basically, if you want to write the story-line and character roles, then you will need a degree that is strong in the language arts. Business skills and knowledge of how game development works is also necessary.

I’m a programmer, so my overall knowledge of game design is fairly limited. If you have more questions about game development, that would be more my area.

Game Tester/Designer Career?

Ok, I’m in my sophomore year in school, I am deciding on a career (which I definitely need to do.) I am thinking about a few things as a career, but being a game tester/designer is my favorite thing I would love to do. If anybody who is one that could give me these answers, I would definitely appreciate it.
1: Requirements on Game Testing/Designing.
2: Where is a good college I could attend.
3: What is the difficulty on Game Designing.
4: The salary for Game Testing/Designing
5: What more do I need to know, I’ve ran out of questions. :)
Thanks for the answers in advance

To be a game tester, you would most likely need to get a degree in Computer Science, or have previous experience in Quality Assurance. The market is not really big for that in most areas. Most of the big video game companies are located in CA,NY, or overseas. It can pay well, but it is not as easy as just playing video games all day. You would need to know how to track defects, recognize some forms of code, and work with others on a high level.

Game designing is difficult and tedious work and would also most likely require a degree in Computer Science. It would pay much more than Games testing though.

Linda asks…

what should i state my expected salary as for a job as a Quality Assurance tester for a major games company?

I’m into the second round of my application. They are asking for my expected salary.

I’ve worked for a games developer in the past, and have a years expeience of games testing.

I don’t want to say too much just in case they get scared away, but I don’t want to sell myself too cheaply. I got around £16K for my last position.

Thanks

Put OPEN for the salary requirement. Too high, and the employer will think they can’t afford you; too low, and they will think you don’t know what you’re doing. OPEN tells them you will negotiate.

admin answers:

It is the video game design equivalent of cleaning toilets. Spending hours running a character into the same wall the same way to try and replicate a glitch or pass through the wall while documenting every attempt. It’s a good job to get your foot in the door for game design, but if you lack the animation or programing credentials to move up in the company, it is a waste of time.
