Charles asks…

How do I get a job in the video game tester area?

I am going to college next year and hopefully probably UC Davis or Santa Cruz. I would like to know what I have to do to become good interest to be one. What experience would I need and do I contact companies individually and ask “What can I do?” please hlep.

Hi LG

While a specific formal education is not essential to become a games tester, and qualifications you do have (or are studying for), especially of related to computer science or math will help.

More important however is an enthisiasm for games, and good communication skills. Your ability to report back clearly to the development team is essential, so put together a good, well written resume (loads of resources online to help you) and demonstrate good communication skills – something like a blog would certainly be a good way to demonstrate your writing skills, and enthusiasm for working in the games industry. If you can demonstrate a good understanding of games, ideally as a part time indie developer (even just writing Flash games in your spare time) that can only help.

Probably more important even then your resume would be contacting the right people in the industry. Getting those “insider contacts” really can make all the difference to getting your foot in the door!

Good luck,

Bill

What would be a good way to convince my mom to let me be an at home video game tester?

I am 14 and already wrote an application, I just need her permission. Any ideas on how to increase the chances of her saying yes?

admin answers:

Maybe 14 is to young to work or you will do this at home?

Maybe you can check out here how to do that: http://www.dutchcomp.com/gameguru.html

Steven asks…

How to get into Video Game testing business?

I am looking at a possible career change and I saw an article about testing video games. I am a very anylitical and detail-oriented person, who is creative and curious by nature. I like video games and I think I could be a good game tester, as I can think methodically and from other people’s perspectives too.

Anybody know anything about this field? How to get into it? What degrees are needed? Credentials required?
